Transition Contrast

Transitions between areas need to integrate visual contrast. The inclusion of tactile contrast is a good idea too, depending on the space. Contrast is a feature that assists anyone who has trouble with vision to identify separation between spaces. That said, don’t make the contrast too extreme as some people may see drastic change of color as a step or a hole.

When making steps safe in stairwells, contrast via color or texture on the treads (edge of step) and on the risers (back of step) is essential.
