Minimize Reaching

Aim to have at least 50% of shelving between 18″ and 48″ from the floor and pull-down shelving for any storage over 60″ from the floor. This will accommodate the greatest amount of reach ranges for all users, whether short, tall, seated, or standing, which is important for universally-designed kitchens.

Pull-out drawers/shelves minimize reaching and possible strain by providing easy access to food products and kitchenware so users don’t need to bend or crawl into a lower cabinet to find what they’re looking for. Lazy susans rotate items around so users can store more and see things easily. All sorts of options exist, such as shelves that rotate out of a corner cabinet.
